Four Walls of Water<\/p>\n

This artistic intervention was located in the laundry of the Francesinhas in the Madragoa neighborhood in Lisbon, which was founded in 1876, and has already been demolished.<\/p>\n
It was intended to reach a synthesis of my research on the spatiality of color and light through the search for a painting made space.<\/p>\n
Its good location as a viewpoint enhanced the visual relationship between the moving water of the river and the still water of the tanks of the washhouse. Being memory of each other, dreaming one in the other. Added to this is the historical weight of this intimate space in the city, which has been a forum for social interaction a meeting place for different generations of women over many years.<\/p>\n
Each of the four water tanks had 12 m x 2 m pieces of methacrylate flying above, a few centimeters from the boundary between the stone and the water and reflected in it. The washhouse in turn functioned as a sounding board. The light passed through the four skins and the tanks were like boats, they had that symbolism, and at the same time, it is undeniable, they also had a relationship with the work of the washerwomen, with the laundry. It created an optical effect of an urn, of entering a clearing in the forest. In an interior, the optical image of entering an exterior arose. It created a kind of temple, within the image of a temple that the laundry room already had. And it was interesting how the noises and images of the city in movement were also reflected in the methacrylate pieces. Through this model of light that the installation became, the painting became space. As Merleau-Ponty tells us: “It is no longer a question of speaking of space and light, but of making space and light that are there speak.”<\/p>\n
